Orthodontic Emergencies Tied to COVID-19 Stress in Shanghai Study

Posted: August 22, 2025 / Source: Pubmed Database

A cross-sectional study in Shanghai, China, found that orthodontic urgencies during the COVID-19 lockdown exacerbated peritraumatic distress in patients. The study included 480 participants with different appliance types, showing higher distress levels in adults, those with temporomandibular joint pain, and urgent cases. Age, TMJ pain, and urgency were independently associated with increased distress levels, highlighting the impact of orthodontic emergencies on patients' mental well-being during crises like the pandemic.
